The Challenges of Changing Your Wardrobe When Your Hair Turns Grey

Having a dark locks of hair slowly turn grey before your eyes is daunting to say the least. But more and more women embrace their grey hair. In fact some people are even dying their hair grey in the name of fashion. Turning grey not only changes your look, but it also changes your wardrobe and thinking towards what you can wear with grey hair.

The director of British Vogue ‘Sarah Harris’ proudly wears her mane of long grey hair. It’s no surprise that for a person who studies fashion for a living, she has impeccable fashion sense, pairing the right colours to her grey hair, going with a classic wardrobe and the theme that less is more.

Choosing the right colours to compliment your hair is essential if you want to walk out the door feeling as amazing as possible each day. It’s so important to find what works for you and stick with that.

Once you’ve committed to and embraced going grey, you can start sorting through your wardrobe.

Culling Your Clothes

Firstly, take a good look at what you already have. Try everything on, and keep what works with your grey hair. There’s no point in keeping what doesn’t work anymore. Make a pile of what you can’t wear again, and have a garage sale or take them up to your local Salvation Army Store.

Black and White

Black and white is a classic style and always looks great with grey. Try adding a colour to make your outfit truly pop, like a pair of red heels or a coloured scarf.

Complimenting Colours

Grey’s always look great with purple tones such as lavender. And try a few bold colours on such as red.

Follow Your Grey Fashion Icons

Look at your grey haired idols such as Diane Keaton, Helen Mirren or whoever has the fashion style that you love. Start following their website, on Facebook or Instagram and simply copy their wardrobe and colour choices.

Stay Away From Grey

Stylists recommend that you stay away from certain shades such as grey clothing to match your grey hair. It can be really ageing and doesn’t tend to lift you up. Stick with the blacks, pure whites and navy blues. If you want to go for colours that’s fine too, but take a look at what you’re wearing in the light to see if it compliments you.

Avoid Warm Colours

As your hair turns to a shade of grey you’ll often find that neutral, warm colours including taupe and beige wash out your face. Wearing bold colours definitely makes you look more vibrant.

Finally, experiment by adding some new colours to your wardrobe and see how they work with your hair. One way of doing this is to purchase several cheap scarves or strips of fabric, put a plain white shirt on, and drape the scarves over your neck. Take photographs and compare what looks best.
