We have some great tips to stop your glasses from fogging up when wearing face masks. With the global pandemic changing how we leave our homes, wearing face masks has become a part of everyday life.  But many people who wear glasses have questions about how to stop glasses from fogging up when wearing a mask.

Vision glasses are necessary for many people to go about their activities of daily living. Glasses are also an important fashion accessory and protect our eyes from sun damage. But if you can’t see because your glasses are fogging up, this is problematic.

But there’s a simple reason why glasses fog up, and there’s a simple solution to stop it from happening. Vision glasses fog up when you wear a face mask because warm breath escapes from the top of the mask when you exhale. The warm breath makes contact with the cooler lens of your glasses. When cooling down, condensation forms, fogging up the glasses. This is problematic because it becomes hard for you to see through the fog.

Sit Your Glasses Over the Mask

Firstly, pull your mask up and over your nose and rest your glasses on top of the mask. This will stop the breath from escaping from the top of the mask. If the mask has a wire, you can create a seal at the top of the mask. Also, by sitting the glasses over the mask, the weight of the glasses will form a seal too.

Use Some Tape

If the above is still not working, you could consider buying some micropore tape (hospital tape) and sticking the mask down over your nose and cheeks. Be sure to use a generous amount of tape for a better seal. You can buy paper tape or surgical tape at your local pharmacy.

Use Contact Lenses Instead of Glasses

If you’re finding it too difficult to wear a mask with glasses, consider wearing contact lenses during the day. If you’ve never worn contact lenses before, you could book a consultation with your optometrist to discuss a contact lens trial.

Cleaning Your Glasses to Prevent Fog

Cleaning your glass lenses with soapy water can help to stop fogging. If you use this cleaning method, it’s recommended that you air-dry them before wearing them again. The thin layer of soap seems to reduce fog.

Alternatively, you could buy a product such as an anti-fog spray for glasses. Most local pharmacies have an anti-fog spray available for purchase.

Finally, don’t forget that eyeglass cleaning should be part of your daily eye care routine to keep your spectacles nice and clear.
