Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer
  • 1 Frying Pan
  • 1 Box Grater
  • 1 Mandoline
  • 1 Sharp knife
  • 1 Stirring Spoon

Ingredients

  • 300 grams Spring Roll Wrappers
  • 250 grams Pork Mince extra lean
  • cups Cabbage shredded
  • ½ cup Carrot grated
  • 4 Spring Onions finely sliced
  • 175 grams Potato
  • 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
  • 2 tsp Rice Wine
  • 1 tbsp Ginger minced
  • 1 tbsp Garlic minced
  • ½ tsp Pepper
  • 2 tsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp Olive Oil Spray

Instructions

  • Firstly, boil and mash a potato. Shred the cabbage and carrot, mince the garlic and ginger, and finely slice the spring onions.
  • In a pan on a medium heat, heat the oil and add the sesame seeds. Once the seeds turn golden brown, turn the heat up to medium-high, and add the meat. Continue stirring until the meat is browned.
  • Add the pepper, ginger, garlic, rice wine, soy sauce, and spring onions. Cook and stir until the liquid is reduced.
  • Next, add the cabbage, carrot and potato and cook for a few minutes until the cabbage is completely wilted.
  • Place a spring roll wrapper in a diamond position, with a point facing you. Place approximately 2 large spoonful’s of filling in the centre, in a horizontal position to you. Fold the middle corners towards the centre over the filling. Then, fold the bottom corner up and roll the wrapper around the filling as tightly as possible. When you get near the end of rolling, brush the final corner with water (or egg) so that it seals it down.
  • Spray the air fryer basket with oil spray and arrange the spring rolls in the basket. Spray the spring rolls with oil spray too. Then cook on 190℃ for approximately 8 minutes on one side. Flip the rolls and cook for an additional 7 minutes on the other side. Continue to flip the spring rolls until all of the pastry is crispy and golden in colour.

Notes

This recipe makes 20 spring rolls. You may need to cook them in a few batches depending on the size of your air fryer.

Reduce the Salt and Fat Content

On average, Australians eat more salt than their bodies need. Adding salt to your diet can have negative health consequences and increase your risks of certain diseases. to reduce the salt/ sodium content of this recipe, consider choosing a salt reduced soy sauce.

Reducing saturated fats in your diet will help with weight management and reduce your risks of certain diseases, such as heart disease. Always aim to choose healthy fats, such as polyunsaturated fats in your recipes. When choosing your meat, opt for an extra lean mince. When adding oil, opt for oils that are greater in polyunsaturated fats, that come from plants or seeds. Olive oil is a great choice.

Swapping Ingredients

The air fryer spring rolls are a versatile appetizer, whereby swapping ingredients is easy. If you want to use a white meat instead of a red meat, chicken mince and turkey mince are a suitable alternative. But, we still suggest that you choose an extra lean mince for this recipe.

Furthermore, many vegetables that are used in air fried rice paper rolls go well in these low calorie spring rolls. You might like to add some leafy greens, bean sprouts, or a prepared slaw mix.

Preparing Ahead of Time

If you’re short of time, it is possible to make the filling for these spring rolls the night before. Then, all you have to do is roll them before you put them in the air fryer.

Oven Baked Spring Rolls

For those of you that don’t own an air fryer, these spring rolls cook well in an oven too. Follow the same steps as you would for the air fryer. Set the oven to 190℃, and cook for approximately 10 minutes on each side, until crispy and golden brown.
