Why is Knitting Perfect for Retirement? Knitting is one of the most rewarding DIY projects for seniors. It’s relaxing, portable, and results in something you can actually use or gift. Even if you’ve never picked up knitting needles before, making a simple scarf is a fantastic beginner project.

Materials You’ll Need

• 1–2 balls of chunky yarn (easier for beginners)
• 1 pair of size 8–10mm knitting needles
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cast On Using the long-tail cast-on method, add 20–30 stitches to your needle (fewer stitches make a narrower scarf).

2. Knit Every Row Work in the garter stitch by knitting every stitch in every row. This produces a flat, stretchy scarf with a simple texture.

3. Keep Going – Continue knitting until your scarf is the desired length (usually 150–180cm).

4. Cast Off – Bind off your stitches, leaving a short tail of yarn.

5. Weave in Ends – Thread the yarn tail onto your tapestry needle and weave it into the edge of your scarf to secure it.

Pro tip: Use brightly coloured yarn or soft natural fibres like merino wool for extra comfort and style.
