I love it when I flick through my old recipes from my school days and find a favourite that I’ve completely forgotten about. before. I must say, my date and walnut loaf was typically just a walnut loaf when I was a teenager. Dates weren’t my favourite. But now, it’s a little different. You can’t substitute the Medjool dates for anything else. They’re just the best in this loaf. They’re so sweet, and add such a punchy flavour to this recipe.
This date and walnut loaf is so tasty. Treating yourself to this dessert or morning tea is definitely worth it, and it tastes best if you spread a generous serving of butter onto it. You could also coat it in honey too.
While this is a sometimes food, it’s a great sometimes food to pull out when you’re having guests over for a cuppa.
Many people like to soak their dates and walnuts in brandy or rum for added flavour. If you want to add this step, it’s best to soak them approximately 2 hours before you start making the loaf.
Date and Walnut loaf can be easily frozen for later. that’s why it comes in handy if you’ve got guests coming over for morning or afternoon tea.
Finally, for those who don’t like dates, you can always substitute them for something else, or simply leave them out of the recipe. If you leave them out, consider adding additional nuts.
