This quick and easy Spaghetti Bolognese recipe is my favourite meal to cook on a busy day. It is a foolproof recipe that has stood the test of time in our home. I have made this dish since I was a young teen, and it never fails to please the family. From the fussiest eaters, to the super healthy folk, this diverse dish will have the entire family smiling.

I also love this quick and easy Spaghetti Bolognese because you can tweak it to suit the tastes of most people. Also, it is nutritious and bursting with flavors. I often make too much, and that’s a bonus, because you can keep it in the fridge for a few days, or freeze leftover sauce to have at a later date.

What Else Can I Use the Bolognese Sauce With?

I use this Bolognese sauce for various purposes. It goes well in a Lasagna, or I love to toast some crusty bread and spoon the bolognese onto the bread with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. I often cook a double batch of bolognese and make a Lasagna to enjoy on another night during the week.

  • Prepare the dried pasta as per packet instructions.
  • Dice the onion and add to a pan with extra virgin olive oil. Cook on a medium heat until the onion is translucent.
  • Add the garlic to the pan with the onion and stir through thoroughly, then add the beef mince, herbs and stock powder.
  • Once the mince is slightly browned, stir in the tomato paste until it is mixed through thoroughly.
  • Finally, add the diced tomatoes and turn down the heat to a simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until the extra liquid is reduced to your liking.
  • The Bolognese is now ready to serve with your favorite pasta. Top it off with a garnish of parmesan and basil.

Tweaks to Suit Your Taste and Preferences

If you don’t love spaghetti pasta, you can always opt for another favourite, such as fettucine, penne pasta, or fusilli spirals. Also, many people prefer using fresh pasta rather than dried pasta, or gluten free pasta. It doesn’t matter which pasta you choose. Just be sure to follow the packet instructions when cooking.

Meat: Many people don’t like red meat, or choose not to eat too much of it. If that is the case, turkey mince or chicken mince are great alternatives, and they’re often leaner. Also, I’ll often use half beef mince, and half pork mince as a taste preference when cooking bolognese. I know that some people also like to add pancetta or bacon to their bolognese for extra flavor.

Sodium and Fat: It is now well known that adding salt to our food is not good for our health. I always choose no added salt, or salt reduced packages where possible. Furthermore, saturated fats are not good fo!r us either. While this recipe uses 10% fat content in the beef mince, opting for extra lean meats will make the meal healthier and reduce the calories too. Additionally, you can use an oil spray if you want to reduce the amount of added olive oil as well.

Vegetables: As a Nutritionist, I love my vegetables! I load every meal that I can with as many vegetables as possible. Consider adding diced mushrooms, grated carrot, and grated celery to your bolognese. I usually add these ingredients when I add the garlic to the frying pan. This will make this versatile Spaghetti Bolognese recipe even better for you to enjoy!
